South Pass Trail
Lake of the Falls

The dramatic South Pass is surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of 3,000-metre giants that rise like stone titans in every direction, with the North Saskatchewan River Valley laid bare beneath you.
Although not yet found on many maps, this trail is quickly earning a reputation as a premier route into the untamed wilds of the Bighorn Backcountry, offering one of the region’s most awe-inspiring ridgeline experiences & a backdoor into the picturesque valley of the Lake of the Falls.
The first 4 km, a family friendly day hike, leads you through a striking contrast of big views, burnt timber, colourful regrowth & creekside meandering before reaching the Lookout.
The next 3 km become more advanced with a steeper incline & light scrambling to SM Peak where you will have the option to summit Mount Henlsey or continue through the saddle to the South Pass.
For the truly wild at heart, a premier multi day backcountry experience awaits. The spectacular South Pass – Lake of the Falls – Landslide Lake – Wildhorse Pass Loop is not a trip to be taken lightly, it demands a passion for big mountain exploration, but its rewards are amongst the finest in the Rockies.
